Eagles soar over Congo, revives AFCON title defense hopes

Saturday, November 15, 2014

The Super Eagles of Nigeria, this afternoon, defeated the Red Devils of Congo in an African Cup of Nations qualifying match played in Pointenoire, Congo Republic.

Two second half goals from returnee striker Ikechukwu Uche-from the penalty spot-and China based forward, Aaron Samuel, ensured victory for the Nigerian side in a match marred towards the end by crowd unruliness.

Prior to the match, Nigeria had recorded only four points from as many games and in danger of being knocked out of the qualifiers, lying third in the group standings behind South Africa and Congo.

With this latest victory, however, the Eagles have now recorded seven points, same as the Congolese, but now require only a victory over South Africa in the last round of qualifying matches to seal their place in next year’s AFCON scheduled for Equatorial Guinea early 2015.

The match against South Africa is set for Wednesday, at the ultra modern Akwa Ibom International Stadium, also known as the ‘nest of champions’, in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

Thumbs up for the Eagles… always good at doing things the hard way.
