EBOLA, INSECURITY TOP AGENDA IN 46TH ECOWAS SUMMIT

Ending the prevalence of Ebola disease currently ravaging some West African Countries and security challenges in North-East Nigeria and other parts of the sub-region formed the major part of discussions at the 46th Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of States and Government of ECOWAS.

 In his welcome address, President Goodluck Jonathan harped on the need to deepen political security and fashion out ways to stabilize the polity in other member states like Guinea-Bissau and Mali. President Jonathan also solicited for global alliance to rid the region of terrorism, piracy, extreme violence and oil bunkering. He also called on member states to contribute to the ECOWAS regional solidarity fund to fight the Ebola disease which has claimed over 7,000 lives almost 9 months. 

The Nigerian President urged the leaders to look beyond politics and make the economic development and integration of the region their fundamental objective. Meanwhile, Chairman of ECOWAS Authority of Heads of States and Government, John Mahama, has assured the Transitional President of Bukina Faso, Michel Kafando, of the Union’s support to ensure stability in his country. 

In his opening remarks at the 46th ECOWAS Summit, Mahama who is also the sitting President of Ghana, said ensuring economic stability in Bukina Faso is of utmost importance especially as the country gears up for the November 2015 elections. He commended West African Presidents for their roles in ending the crisis that riddled Ouagadougou. President Mahama also thanked the Joint Committee of ECOWAS, African Union and the United Nations for their efforts in ensuring total stability in the African continent.
